I briefly had a Mazdaspeed 6 that had also bad steering wheel controls, so I feel your pain. Don't just throw buttons on the wheel - ask people to test pre-production steering wheels and see what their feedback is.

I primarily use the steering wheel buttons for volume also. This would annoy the hell out of me.

This has been a Nissan standard for years. It's awful and I'm sure the only reason they haven't changed it is for "consistency".

Being considerably lighter trim pieces, it looks like they would get grimy and show dirt pretty quickly too.
