Transmission problem

It started revving up too high to shift for a week and then one day it just fell out of gear I stopped and started in first it would run there, tried to get home but after a few miles it quit all foward gears so i started to back it home it quit after a few miles but if I stopped a while it would go in reverse again for a few minutes the fluid does not smell burned and it is red what could be the problem.
