Front differential

I have a 2004 chevy s10, zr5. I just bought and found out that front driver cv axle was popped out of the diff. And has no gear oil in it. What im wondering is I have only used 4x4 twice for very short times at very low speeds like 2mph speeds and it worked. And if im running 2 wheel drive all the time is the differential still good or does it engage and spin also while in 2 wheel.

if differential is not engaged(not in 4x4) it isn't turning any gears, but the axle is turning, could cause other damage. I wouldn't drive it without repairing it, or at least removing the axle.
