2000 Tundra after market add-ons

I have the 200 Tudra LTD -- and I love it. The
only problem that I have had with it so far is that
it could really use a locking differential. I
have had my truck off road in Colorado already, and
found that it performs quite well despite the
missing locker. However, there is no real
substitute for a locker. Does anyone know where
there may be a locker available to add to the
Tundra, or if Toyota is planning on adding it to
the list of options next year etc.?

Also, what about the skid plates that come with
the TRD package? There are skid plates on my TRD
Tundra, but compared with other Toyotas I have
seen, they seem minimal. Comments?

say that the locker is not needed.. If you needed one Toyota would have included it on the truck. All loyal Toyota owners must believe what ever Toyota marketing tells them..
When you get stuck off road and you are walking back to call a tow truck just say
"Have we gone to far? or have others not gone far enough? " 1,000 times and your problem will go away.

If you guys really want to go off-road, you'd be better off in a tricked out Jeep. There is no substitute(Hummer aside). I own a Tundra so don't think I'm anti-Toyota. Silverados and F-150s(or Rams) are no better. If you doubt this theory bring your stock trucks to Tellico(N.C.) or to Rosser(Tn.) with or without the lockers and see what happens. It will be fun but UGLY!!!!! Trust me. Remember, if you have never been stuck, you've NEVER really been OFF-ROAD.

    RE: locker for Tundra

Try Ivan Stewart's website...an e-mail to them may get you some info.

    Rocles,

Are you serious about your comment regarding the Tundra's engine? How can you knock that aspect of the Tundra? The engine is AMAZING! Have you driven a Tundra yet? Just curious.

All true lockers are aftermarket. Anything you order when you buy the truck is a small help at most. Check with ARB or some of the others and get a true LOCKER not just a limited slip.

Putting down something you know nothing about ruins your credibility. How do you expect anyone to take you seriously? Drive it, then post your findings positive or negative. But if you are going to drive it with preconceived ideas of why you won't like it, don't bother driving one. Just keep those blinders on.

I like your honesty. If my memory is correct, I believe you are in the roofing business. F.Y.I.--I did have to transfer 15 bundles of shingles from one job to the other yesterday. Who says my Tundra can't do "heavy" work. Sponge would have been helpful.

About 3 months ago, two crackheads stole a Ford Ranger(I'd guess the truck to be about 8 years old) & a rather large trailer. They drove to our site and stole a front door unit, 3 sheets of plywood and 108(YES, I said 108) bundles of shingles. They were caught about 3 miles down the road and we recovered all property. You should have seen that truck!! I'll never understand how they were able to steer that sucker at all. I'll post the picture of the truck and trailer(fully loaded) if I can find it. It was hilarious. Of all the things to steal on a construction site(there were microwaves, stoves, and dishwashers on site also), these morons tried to steal close to 8000 lbs. of shingles. Crack does strange things to people.

    dockinsm,
You have a valid point.....to a point. Get it? I disapprove of comparisons of the Tundra to the Big 2 1/2 full-size trucks. If the Dakota was made by say....Honda, I would have the same reaction to guys pumping it up to a F-150 or Silverado. I have never said the Tundra wasn't a legitimate truck, rather it's not in the same class against Ford or Chevy. Size does matter to a contractor like myself. Options are another drawback of the Toy-o.
All other sidebars and jibes I have made here were just in pure fun. If you have taken offense, I understand and apologize.
Trust me, I'm no jingoist. The day Toyota makes a truck that can fit my needs; then I'll take a look and maybe buy it. I was a huge Chevy fan growing up and it took years to shatter their myth but the Fords I owned broke it. Who knows? Maybe Toyota will do that in 5 years in what took Ford 25??!! Just keep in mind that I'm just having fun. I knock compact trucks as well and I don't test-drive them as well......

I'm thinking about putting aftermaket exhaust system and/or headers on my V8 Tundra for added sound quality and more low end power, specifically in the 1500 to 2700 rpm range. Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

Right now about the only option you have is Borla.
  • berglund1berglund1 Member Posts: 9
Borla isn't your only option, Gibson has a system as well. Ray Millen Motorsports tells me their intake system is almost ready for sale, and that their desire is to modify their turbo kit that they sell for the v8 landcruiser for the tundra and have that available within 3 months.

Their turbo kit with 5 psi boost, dual exhaust, and intake brings the landcruiser to 375 HP and over 450 ft. lbs of torque!

Can you say competitive with the lightning but in a 4 door access cab!

I have just installed a DRL unit that uses the headlights as your daytime running lights similar to the factory DRL. The unit is made by DesignTech in Springfield VA. I bought it from www.autoaccessory.com. It cost $25 plus shipping. I followed the instructions exactly and kept blowing the in-line fuse of the unit. I called tech support and told them the problem and said I had the Tundra repair manual including the wiring diagrams (boy those manuals are expensive, but useful). Anyway, I faxed the headlight diagram to them and they said that the wiring to the headlight was different than domestic autos. Essentially the low and high beam wires to the bulb are shorted to ground when the switch is off, no wonder I was blowing fuses. I then connected the high beam wire from the unit to the power wire to the passenger side bulbs and that did the trick, both lights work. I purchased the reduced (75%) intensity. They have a 100% intensity unit, same price.

According to the wiring diagram for the headlights with DRL option, it too uses a resistor to reduce the intensity of the bulbs when in DRL mode.

Just wanted to let you all know that there is a viable aftermarket DRL option at a reasonable cost.

I just bought an white SR5 with tan interior. Can anybody recommend top quality, Rottweiler-resistant seat covers?
  • 1taxman1taxman Member Posts: 27
    Try these:
    http://www.wetokole.com/
don't know if they are tough enough for a Rottweiler, but you can ask them.

I'll second taxman. Those Wet Okole seat covers, which are neoprene and I believe waterproof/resistant are great!

I've been shopping for truck caps for the tundra, and everyone seems to be passing off their T-100 models as equals. Today it was installed and when I got back to work I noticed I could see into the stake holes on the rails on both sides evenly. Clearly this model is not made specifically for the Tundra. Be careful when buying a cap, I'm going to be taking this one back. I'll let you know how it all works out. Has anyone found a nice cap?
  • vaffanculovaffanculo Member Posts: 4
I have found A.R.E. caps to be excellent.Don't they make a dedecated Tundra cap? What color is your truck? What color cap? Thanks.

It's here, I'm picking up my carryboy canopy tomorrow!
  • ehundsehunds Member Posts: 1
Has anyone found a camper (not a shell) that will fit the Tundra? I have gone to several dealers and all of them say the bed is narrow.
  • delddeld Member Posts: 8
Has anyone put a bug deflector or wood dash on their Tundras? I've been told that the hood deflector runs 150; seems rather high to me. The aftermarket dash is 325. I'm also interested in putting on a canopy but have been told by the local shops that none are made specifically for the Tundra yet.

    New kid here.

Just ordered a 2000 Tundra 2wd SR5 access cab with the 4.7L. I have been fumbling around without much luck and wondered if anyone knows of companies making toolboxes to fit the tundra bed (the type that go across the bed snugly behind the cab, resting on the bed rails). I'm specifically looking for an aluminum model, one that won't rust away when I drive her home to SC.

    Thanks.

I just had one put on my Tundra and the price was $109.00 (That's a CA price)
  • edr3edr3 Member Posts: 16
I'm not sure about the dash kit, but you can get a deflector for a lot less. Deflecta-Shield and Lund both make a model for the Tundra at a price around $60. I got mine from a local truck parts store and they're also available through mail order. They usually come in a brownish smoke color, but with a Thunder Gray truck I went with a clear one with the idea of having it painted to match. I've decided to leave it clear as it is almost invisible. Check Lunds web-site and your local after market/truck retail shops and they'll be able to find you a shield. Shop around though, as I got quotes from $50 on up to $90 bucks! Good luck.

Look at some of the Sun-Lite folding campers (sun-lite.com). Any half-ton model should work. I like the Eagle SB with 44" width and 21" center weight. Bed width shouldn't be a problem.

Has anyone had a Leer, Snug Top or Stockland Cab-hi shell installed on their Tundra ?
Would appreciate your feedback ,on convenience, quality . Thanks Bill

I've had all three and more. Email me if you want all the sordid details.

I have a new Tundra Access Limited. It only came with an under rail bedliner. Now I need something to protect the top edge of the bed. Has anyone found anything? I don't think I want a rail, not sure haven't seen any Trunda's with one. I might should have gotten a sprayed bedliner.
  • tp4unctp4unc Member Posts: 437
    www.putco.com

They have some nice bed rail protectors. You'll probably have to call or e-mail them for Tundra applications, though. I believe you can order through AutoZone for less money.
  • rjcurryrjcurry Member Posts: 8
Thanks Todd, I went to the web site and looked. They do have some good looking rail protectors. Do you have a Tundra?
  • tundradudetundradude Member Posts: 588
I picked up some tundra rubber mats at the dealership and they are nice for these winter months. They weren't much either and they are real thick. If this is for you, I would check out your local dealer.

I have a regular cab and these mats are just for the front. I have heard you can get the back ones too if you have a back seat in your Tundra.

Has anyone seen a picture of a Tundra with the Toyota bug deflector? Is there a link to a picture online?
  • tp4unctp4unc Member Posts: 437
www.tundrasolutions.com Click on "member's trucks". I believe there is a picture there.
  • tp4unctp4unc Member Posts: 437
I received the new Performance Products catalog today. Several nice items for the Tundra. Performance chips($399), "No-Slip Traction System"($402.30), Gibson exhaust($248.90), Borla exhaust($462.60), several suspension items, and various other goodies. Check 'em out if you get the chance. Better yet, buy some of the items...try them out and report back to me. Thanks!

Has anyone installed the Weathertech Weatherflectors on their windows? If so, what are your thoughts? From the brochures, they look better than the Ventvisors that stick on with 3M tape. Just curious if they work OK.
  • jtedjted Member Posts: 17
I have Ventvisors on my last 3 truck and they work just fine. Were did you see the other kind?
  • teg33teg33 Member Posts: 7
Does anyone know of an aftermarket locking differential for the Tundra?
    Anyone actually tried one?

    tp4unc,
Where can I find a "Performance Products" catalog, I'd like to check out that "no-slip traction system"?
  • tp4unctp4unc Member Posts: 437
There is a link to Performance Products just to the right of this post.
  • tp4unctp4unc Member Posts: 437
Make that to the LEFT of this post. It's been a long day!
  • teg33teg33 Member Posts: 7
Let's just forget I asked that question.

Just a note, I tried the "shop online" link and found nothing of interest. I then tried the "free catalogs" link and made my request. I guess I'll just have to wait.

    Thanks

The PICKUPS Conference has gotten WAY too big....

it is unwieldy to manage, and difficult to use for "newbies." There is entirely TOO much topic duplication, so I will be doing some SERIOUS topic consolidation in the next few weeks, getting us down to not more than 2-3 topics per vehicle type, and ultimately down to 200 topics or less.

THIS weeks consolidation candidates are: Tundra's, Tacoma's and Rangers.

In that vein, please consolidate this Tundra topic to Welcome Toyota Tundra - V and continue these discussions there.

    Thanks!
