Mazda 3 and Driving in the Snow -- Still a problem?

My parents had a Mazda in 2009 and it couldn't be driven in the snow. My mother loved the car, but swore never to buy another Mazda because it could not be driven safely in even a little bit of snow.
Other blogs and Google searches show this WAS a problem in that year. Is it still a problem? Can I drive a Mazda 3 hatchback safely and without getting stuck or in the ditch in the snow belt?
Thanks.

I am puzzled by this post. Having driven both a Mazda Protege hatchback and a Mazda3 hatchback every winter here in Canada without any issues, I wonder what kind of problems your parents experienced with their vehicle. Were they driving without winter tires? Most vehicles would be dangerous to drive without them in the winter and that's why they are mandated by law in some provinces here.
