2004 Ford Explorer failsafe mode

Have a 2004 Ford explorer, the engine failsafe mode keeos coming on. just had the spark pkugs and coils changed out. but it continues to come on. the machanic said the timing chain neess replacing. That has nothing to do with the engine failsafe mode displaying I have heard tho. Any suggestions as to what it may be. Was previously reading a code
