Dash lights flicker on and car dies while driving.

I have a 2006 towncar lately it's been acting up the other day out of the blue it wouldn't go in reverse had to push it.next day it started up fine went to put into drive and the dash lights went a little haywire and it died took a time or two to get to stay running but made it to work.leaving work the next morning started fine got about a block away and it died again started right back up to the next light and died again got it started made it home.the reverse works and then doesn't.my husband drove home and it was dieing of and on the whole way home but we didn't have to pull over because as long as we where in motion he just put it into neutral and start it .

I would take a very close look at battery cables to ensure they are tight and no corrosion (both ends if possible) to start with. Alternater perhaps is questionable also.

Put a new alternater in and changed the cables at that time about 8 months ago,would the alternated affect it going in reverse?
