Idle Surge to 2000 RPM When Shifted to Park (Intermitant)

My '05 Ford Freestyle Limited with CVT has 114,000 miles on it and has been very reliable without excessive service expenditures. I have maintained the vehicle in accordance with the maintenance schedule, including the 60K mileage fluid and filter change on the CVT.

Yesterday the engine surged from idle to 2000 RPM when I shifted into Park. It happened again today when my wife took the car to the grocery store. The engine will stay at this RPM until it is turned off. Shifting into gear does not eliminate the surge. The only accessories active were the air conditioner and the radio.

What could be the cause of this surge, and what needs to be done to fix it?
