2001 Ford Escort ZX2

We have a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 that is having issues with the gearshift. It either moves freely between P R N D or it completely sticks. Could this be linkage or is it definitely the transmission? If it is the transmission, approximately how much would a new one cost? Thanks, Kelly

    Is it stuck in park? Then once you get it out of park seems OK until you put it back into park? Check to see if your brake lights are working correctly, especially when the shifter it is sticking. Have someone else check to see if they are working. If they are not test/inspect the brake light switch and wiring harness.
