i have recently purchased a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, the pervious owner told me I need a central computer, what exactly is that? And how does it affect the car? I've tried looking up the part but I can't seem to find it.

The ECM is basically an on-board computer in your car, it's composed of hardware that's encoded with software. An electronic control module unit receives information from the sensors around the vehicle and uses this information to make decisions and carry out certain actions in the vehicle.

You can't find it because your Jeep doesn't use one. If you had one of the Chrysler/Dodge that did use a CTM (Central Timer Module) it would be responsible for operation of the interior lights, and key fob operation. It would also be part of the vehicle content security system. Those operations are all directly controlled by the BCM in your Jeep.
