I have no 1st gear at all. I only get 2nd if I shift manually. 3rd and 4th are working just fine. No weird noises or vibrations. I have been driving like this for months now and haven't really had any probs. I do, however, have loads to carry and hills to climb. If I leave the shifter in drive, it will start off in 3rd every time, and there is no difference at all whether hot or cold. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

You need to make a decision and you have three choices.

    1. Drive the car as is until it drops.
    2. Have the transmission overhauled.
    3. Dump the car. It has 250,000 miles on it.

Thanks isellhondas. Somebody suggested it might be a faulty kickdown (TV) cable. I'll check that first. Of course I do have another option: to replace with a second hand tranny. I'm reluctant to scrap it because the engine was actually rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago, and runs perfectly.
