Can anyone follow up on this - my brother in Ontario wants a new Lexus LS460. I live in the US South and could buy it for him if that would solve that problem, but would want to avoid US state sales tax. I contacted a dealer in Florida who told me Lexus prohibits them from selling new cars for export to Canada. Any suggestions? Thanks
Well, my Highlander is looking pretty awesome in my garage! The transport company was actually pretty great, the driver was very easy and accomodating to work with. My Toyota dealer set up the transport company which in turn set up the broker, they used Cross Border Trading, which used Cole Brokers if I am correct. So all I had to do was sign a form that they emailed to me from signing short power of attorney rights to them for the paperwork at the border to be done in my name, I emailed it back to them, and that was that. I then called the transport company that the dealer had arranged for and checked scheduling and had the driver call me when he was 45 minutes from the drop spot, he was spot on the money for time, and I got my vehicle off the truck and on the lot within literally minutes and was off driving with a full tank of gas from the dealer! It was very easy and everything so far has gone majorly smoothly, and very quick. The Highlander I got was in perfect condition, no bumps dings or scratches, and exactly as I ordered. There were no surprises, it was as you would expect in buying a brand new car, mint condition. The tank full of gas was a great surprise though! If anyone wants any information or more details email me at beckie@sasktel.net and I will try and help you out!
All I need now is my Form 2 and then off to the Canadian Tire for the inspection. So wish me luck that the RIV processes the form sooner than later because I am going to go bonkers waiting to drive my new vehicle!!
I know this is a bit dated but as I recently have been dealing with this I can confirm that you can not bring a car across with an MSO + Bill of sale if it is not listing you as the purchaser. This will not be acceptable by Canadian Customs, and if your friend advised you otherwise he is incorrect, or misunderstood what you were asking.
Can it be done? Possibly..the human factor is always in play.
Is it allowable by Canadian Customs? No, it is not. The only time MSO is permitted is if you are buying a new car for import, with MSO listing your name as purchaser.
I am looking at importing a 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid from the U.S. and am having a tough time finding a dealer that will export in the NorthEast. If you have anybody that you could forward to me I would appreciate it. All of the dealers that I have contacted have agreements with Toyota that they will not export. Regards

I live in Ontario, but don't mind purchasing from a dealer in further away states as long as I can get shipping taken care of. So the question is.... who's willing to sell to Canadians, and what kind of deals can you get?
hey guys, I have been desperately trying for about a week now with no luck to find a Toyota dealer in the northeast that will sell to a canadian buyer. I am looking for a Toyota Rav 4 V6 4WD Limited w/ leather/jbl package. If anyone knows of any dealers that are willing to work with Canadians, please email me at dj_groovin@hotmail.com any assistance is GREATLY appriciated.
Hey Siennaowner, please send me that dealer in detroit, that would work to me if they are still selling... I would greatly appriciate it: dj_groovin@hotmail.com
There is some confusion with my earlier posts. I have a dealer in Montana & a dealer in Oregon if anyone wants the contacts - email me at pdunone at gmail.com.
Some one contacted me and advised that shipping from Montana to Buffalo was in the neighbourhood of $1,200 - $1,500 according to Ebay, so it still may make sense for people in Ontario.
I do not have any contacts in Detroit. That was another poster.
Just got back from Florida and I went to check out the Prius at the Toyota dealer - sorry they cannot keep them anymore - they have a long list - no hybrids at all - no HIghlanders - no Camry and no Prius - looks like with $3.80 a gallon and people are starting to like Hybrids.
The forum is for discussion, not for posting your email address (and requests for dealer names). If you want a response from someone then send them a personal message using the link through their i.d. By posting your email in a forum you are not adding anything to the discussion and you are also making yourself a super-sized target for spam. The PM function is there to protect you and the thread.
Has anyone had any experience importing a CX-9? Has anyone had problems getting the recall letter from Mazda or did you just get the stuff from the dealer?
2008 Highlander Hybrid LTD sits on my driveway waiting for Form 2
Experienced some small glitches I did not read on this forum so thought I would share:
1. Cnd Customs insisted on seeing proof of exactly how much I paid; dealer invoice was not acceptable to him he wanted cancelled cheque or bank transfer document. Luckily I brought my bank transfer with me. My bank transfer went to my lawyer in US rather than dealer and he accepted that, BUT the transfer was higher than my invoice price to cover lawyer fee and disbursements so Cnd Customs charged me duty and GST on the higher amount including my legal fees; to him it looked like I paid more than invoice for the vehicle. Had I brought my legal invoice I might have avoided that. 2. Cnd Customs asked if I had any work done; Yes, a hitch was installed for $765 parts and labour and showed him the work order (would have been $950 in Canada). The hitch was included in the invoice for the vehicle but not broken out in detail, just rolled into grand price, so he assumed I paid for that separately even though I advised him otherwise (I could not prove it what I did not do). Yes, he charged me duty and GST on the hitch. 3. Dealer Recall letter did not have VIN# on letter nor dealer stamp on print out attached. RIV rejected for that reason but in 1 hour got recall letter from Toyota USA and they accepted that. RIV website is clear you need VIN on the letter even though VIN is on printout becuase nothing to connect letter to printout or dealer to printout. Dealer advised this same letter has been accepted many times before without issue.
Maybe I got unlucky or maybe Customs and RIV are getting more picky, but had not read about theses glitches in this forum, so thought I would share. Lessons learned for next time.
PS: If you are looking for a Prius better get on a waiting list; I could find none on a lot in dealers I contacted in NW USA; Toyota cannot keep up with the demand right now.
PPS: I have read some posts here and received some emails from people posting here saying importing Toyota from USA is dead and no dealers will deal. Not true. There are ways of doing it legitimately and safely for the dealer and safely for the buyer, no state tax if done properly.
Well, I have asked over 30 dealers to sell me a new Toyota, only one would. I offered to register in Montana but most wouldn't accept that. They don't want Toyota to see it re registered in Canada. I would love to hear how you did it.
Email me at robinsj1@telusplanet.net from a recognized Cnd email server like telus, shaw, or your business server so I can see you are truly from Canada (not gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc.) and I will share it with you. It's simple and I know of no less than about 5 that have done it in past 4-5 months coming into Alberta and BC from NW USA. Whoever told you Toyota can see where it is re-registered is not being accurate; they would have to be doing searches in Canada on their VINs; pretty sure they are not doing that or care at that point.
Regarding your issues: 1. Canadian custom said that dealer invoice is not sufficient 2. Canadian custom checked additional work done or options added We use a custom broker when we ship and import the vehicles to Canada. And we have never ever encountered the above 2 issues.
I am not sure where the rumors come from, but you are correct. Importing Toyota from USA is NOT dead. We are still importing from our Toyota dealers every week. And our customers do not need to pay state tax as well.
Yah, no one else I talked to and no one posting here seemed to have these issues either; like I said I got unlucky with my Cnd Customs dude; most have told me the Customs guy fills in the Form 1 for you and this guy took the instruction sheet off and gave it to me to fill in; I made a mistake, of course, and then in a gruff manner tore it up and gave me another one and highlighted the sections I needed to complete. RIV.ca also says customs will collect RIV fee; not with me but he did say to pay it as soon as you get home online and ask for Form 2 by fax or email. It was Friday of long weekend so I'm thinking he did not want to be at his job and was more than a little cranky. Like I said, bad luck, but everyone should be prepared to prove payment just in case!!
I have sent many Toyota vehicles to Canada, new and used, and while the used vehicles are easy the new ones are getting to be more difficult. I have relationships and processes in place with dealers and go out of my way to protect those relationships but even with all of the proper steps taken it is still difficult. I say this to any Canadian who finds a Toyota dealer to purchase from directly, do it on the spot, even if you pay MSRP the savings over your prices in Canada are still significant, and frankly, even if you had to pay US state sales tax, the savings on the more expensive units is still there! The last Tundra I completed had a savings of approx. $20000.00 over the same vehicle purchased in Canada so as I said, the savings is there.
Agreed, the savings are definitely there: Highlander Hybrid LTD my savings were slightly more than $10,000 rather than buying AB, after counting every $1 I spent on the transaction and getting to US and driving back including using a lawyer to handle the money and registrations while I was away. Not exactly apple to apple compare because of difference in option bundling in Canada vs US, but my minimum LTD cost in US vs minimum LTD cost in AB I can get created the savings.
Is there a written guide or booklet with all the details to help me buy a car in the US and import it to Canada?
I'm thinking about buying my next car in the US and bringing it back to Canada. I've read some of the posts in this forum, but never having done this before I am hoping someone has compiled a detailed, step by step guide of all the requirements so that I know exactly what to expect, what to do, and in what order so I don't run into problems. If not, someone should write one...I'd buy it!
For example, I heard that you have to leave the vehicle at the border for two days before you can bring it across, but I've no idea whether this is true.
Does anyone know if such a guide exists? I'm a real left brainer and prefer to a) know what's going to happen every step of the way and b) have a set of detailed instructions to follow.
You may consider using an import broker, especially if you don't have an US address from a state with low or no state tax. The savings is enough to cover their fees.

they should be able to point you in the right direction and you might help them raise some minimal funds to keep them going
or you could join the APA.ca for around $70 and spend $1500 for a Canadian car broker recommended by the APA to do all the work for you.
