General Motors Discount

We are buying our first new vehicle and will use
my father's GM discount for employees. If anyone
has used this, could you tell us if it is fixed or
negotiable and what questions we should ask?

there is the GMS and GMO. The GMS is where you take a vehicle out of dealer stock and GMO is where you order a vehicle. GMO you get a set discount (usually between 12-18% on the base vehicle and 12-18% on the options - they can be different percents). GMS you take something off the lot, make your best deal, and then take another 5% off. Most prefer to order because you get exactly what you want and it's usually a little cheaper, but you have to wait. I'd ask your father or the dealer and they should walk you through it. I ordered a 2000 GMC 1/2 ton Sierra and got 17% off base and options. Take care...

My dad recently bought a 2000 blazer he had the suppliers discount. Heres the deal you go in with the paper work u need for the deal pick out the car then on the price list ( i dont know exactly but its the sheet the salesman has) and there is a price on there for gm employees. That will be the price u pay non negotiable. Our deal was that price and then they added 3% to that because he only received the supplier deal. I believe but do not quote me on this it is like 16% off the MSRP i know when i buy my silverado next yr it will be 13% off. I already have a price for that and i havent even ordered it. Its a nice thing then you dont have to deal and mess with dealers. Hope this helps email me if u have any more questions ok my dad just went through the buying process and itll probably be the same to what your going through except your vehicle will have a bigger discount hey a $32000 blazer for $27500 isnt bad. My email address is ryanbab28@aol.com if u have anything else u need answered.

Both of the discounts are fixed, for example it is 17% off for a full size truck with GMO (used to be 18% grrr). With GMS the discount is still 17%, but you have to add back in the dealers cost to stock the vehicle. GMS costs, at most, 2-3% more than GMO. The names used to be Option 1 and Option 2. GMO is the same as Option 1. Option 2 was where the negotiated price -5% was the final price.

Up here in Canada we still do Option 1 and Option 2. Option 1 is order the vehicle and pay dealer invoice. Option 2 is suppose to be negotiate your best price and then the take and additional 5% of MSRP off the negotiated price. The dealers up here do not do it. They sell all vehicles at dealer invoice. The reason being if you don't like the deal you will just order anyways. Plus lets face it most of the vehicles today come with everything most people want anyways and if the dealer can move a vehicle off the lot so much the better. I actually bought my Sierra at $500.00 Canadian below invoice. I Didn't want to pay $800.00 for the 5.3L engine and my dealer did not want to have to get a truck from another dealer. I dealt with a salesmen at first but as soon as said I was buying under Option 2 the sales manager took me into his office and worked out the deal for the truck on his lot.

The bottom line is they will negotiate if they have a vehicle on the lot identical to what you want, they will give you the better price. The dealer makes their profit off the hold backs and rebates which you cannot have.

and it says GMS is a fixed price equal to GMO plus dealer charges to stock and market the vehicle. Must have done out with that 5% thing when they did away with option 1 & 2. But still I would think you would be able to neg. some of that dealer charge or you could just drive on down the road to the next dealer. Because 2% of $25,000 is $500. Maybe a small price to pay to get it right away, but I would still order if you can. Maybe the dealer charges are all the same, but I don't know and would find it hard to believe that all dealer stick to that without trying to milk a little more out of it...

I'd check again. Mine was 17% off.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
13% off is the supplier deal not the gm employee deal

there's a penalty for not taking a vehicle you ordered. I ordered a Y2K Sierra in Aug. and was told that it would be here in Dec. I have to go in tommorrow and cancel it though. Didn't put anything down, but will this effect me somehow if I need to order one later?? Thanks...
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
No penalty. It wasn't built yet.

My dealer said even if it was sitting in the Lot...I didn't have to take it. (Unless it was some horrible combo and stripped down that would be hard to sell)

I bet he would love to have a 2500 LT on the lot.

    LOL

GM allows 4 cars per year to be bought under the discount in each family. If it was a GMO order...you may have lost one of those 4 certificates?

    Big deal

only one purchased this model year. I'll probably have to wait till next year to order one so we'll have 4 more. Hopefully by then I can get a 3/4 ton, but I just lost my job so I had to cancel it. Hopefully got another job lined up. Take care...

    Than a Job yesterday.
I was at a Mobil station getting back into my work truck and two guys rushed me. Put a gun to my face and demanded my money or they would blow my brains out. They got my cards, money, cell phone, and license. Thankfully I have my life. Who cares about the other stuff. I would like to have my address back so no one would know where to go...but I doubt they even have it. probably in a dumpster or on the side of the road?
Happened so damn fast..didn't even remember what they looked like.
Too bad it wasn't at home and I heard them coming....course who knows even then?

Glad to still be here to talk to ya all.

I gotta get into some kind of Internet based Biz where I don't go to those places. 21 years in biz and the first time this has happened.

    Oh well.

Actually slept good last night......amazing what Rumple Minze,Jim beam, and Killian's can do for ya to soften the whole scene!

    Later man

I own/run a Coffee service. I deal with mostly offices but over the years have several gas stations with Coffee and cappuccino. It wasn't a real bad place....but i guess it don't matter?

Vendors...wether it be the chip guy...candy guy..peanut guy...etc...always get payed in cash. So they figured 3:00 in the afternoon....i got lots of cash!
They ended up with MY cash..and none of the company cash. I had the clip board in my hand the whole time and never even thought about it being there. It had lots of money. He kept getting pissed and asking where it was...I told him I don't have any. never dawned upon me that he meant the company money.

Enough people flocked around and made noise to scare them off I guess? Don't know where I would be had there not been a crowd?

I've mentioned that in future years i will sell the areas that are less desirerable these days.....perhaps the future is now?

Gotta get into the internet biz. Have two windows open all day....one to check money coming in...one to check Edmunds!

99% of the public thinks car sales people are crooks and there just trying to make a living. I sold them for 3 months and had to get out - to cut throat. You would think this would be a great job being around new cars and TRUCKS all day, and it would if you could find a honest dealer. Honest dealer - not around here...
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Kinda like Tax Cut....or Jumbo shrimp..

My salesman gave me a pretty good honest feeling....but I know some of it was just BS

    have no choice.

    Today was much better.

Does anyone have any experience ordering through GMO. I called the gmo people and they did not know
anything about allocations so they referred me to
gmc. GMC simply said you always have to wait for anallocation. I ordered on 10/6 and it still has not been ordered. I get the feeling the dealer could care less about placing my order cause they make so little on the transaction. Plus they have to, according to him use an allocation on such a hot veichle. Patience wearing thin here in phoenix. Yes I'm elgible for GMO.
