When the Hybrid batteries die or fade, what is it like?

I have a 2006 HH AWD Limited that I bought new in 2005, have nothing but good things to say about it. The car is now at 82,000 miles (mostly suburban driving in New England), but is also 10 years old. My wife and I drive down to FL for the winter, and since the batteries are beyond the 8 year warranty, my wife is asking me: how long can we expect the batteries to last, and, when the batteries do "go", is there any warning? If the hybrid batteries fail, can the car still be driven with the ICE engine?
Please help me answer my wife....I do love the vehicle.

We were #17 on our dealer's wait list for the release of the 2005/2006 HH (non-AWD) it now has 198,000 miles on it. We started having problems with the hybrid inverter a while ago. Best that I can say is that we have had some scary dashboard warning lights but the car has yet to leave us stranded. At 198,000 I probably won't be doing any more cross-country road trips but at 82,000 we were driving it from Northern California to San Felipe Mexico and back without a worry. Actually one of those trips was done after the inverter issues at around 130,000 miles. That may have been foolish but the HH got us home.

Well, that certainly lets me know we both have dependable cars. But I'd ask you to be more specific: when you had the inverter problem, how did it affect driving the car? Did the ICE still work normally?
