    These real world mpg numbers are absolutely horrible for a compact SUV.

    I average 24 mpg regularly with my 05 Escape V6 2WD in hilly terrain. It has 2 more cylinders and 5 less gears. It also has no issue downshifting to keep the power on which is the opposite of most modern trannys.

    It's a little early to complain about the mpg's, but given that this isn't a turbo and does have the 9-speed it is not an auspicious beginning.
