Transmission I think

my 01 300m has started making a whirring noise when you press the accelerator i have been told its the transmission and i need a new one. sometimes it wants to lag and almost shut off it has popped transmission codes but when cleared out they stay gone for awhile. Any suggestions on whether its the whole tranny or possibly just something inside of it.
