The nice thing about focusing on an OTD number is that you don't care if the dealer has high doc fees or wants to sell you a bunch of packages or extended warranties. Your focus is on the bottom line and nothing else matters.
Usually the end of the month or quarter is the best time to make a deal, since dealers may need to move some metal to make quota.
Okay, that's not necessarily the best way, but it's one way.
