Dash lights

Sorry if this has been discussed before but since I'm a newbe I'll ask again. My daughter has a 2004 Blazer (172K), when she has the light switch in the automode the dash lights don't work even though all the outside lights will be on. If she turns the switch tothe "lights on" mode the dash lights work fine. Fuse? Short? Switch? How do I test and is it difficult to replace the switch? Thanks
