Transmission Shifting Problems

Hi,
I'm sure this has been discussed many times, but I am very new to this (my first time ever posting on a truck forum) so please, bear with me. I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT, 318, V8, with around 220k miles. I finally decided to sell the truck (for only $500!) and when I went to pick it up, to meet the buyers, it would not shift from 1st to 2nd without first putting it in neutral, and then shifting back into drive and easing on the gas. After that, 3rd up shifted fine. However, like I said, 1st and 2nd red line until I put it in neutral, and then will shift. Also, I've only used ATF in it. Do you think the transmission is going out, or are there things I can check? The trans is only about 4 years old, with around 65k miles on it. I am a female, and in all honesty, have had 3 mechanics today only tell me I need a new trans and they will "do it for me." Ha, so like I said, I'm willing to check/do anything. Thanks!
