I wonder if it has anything to do with the version of Android that you're using.

And this is why I do my own stereo installations. Android products on your NEX unit will only work if the cable is connected to the "USB 2" input, whereas iOS products work on either "USB 1" or "USB 2". It sounds like your installer plugged your cable into "USB 1", which would typically make sense.

I think more investigation needs to be in order. I'm sure there are a TON of people at Edmunds with Android phones of various version and type. Have them try it? Maybe it's something about the Samsung Galaxy (which always does things their own way) and/or version of Android or other settings.

I'm pretty sure you have to have the Android Auto app installed; do you?

Diversity equals fragmentation. It's your phone, not the head unit. Have someone with a new high-end Android phone try it.

Also check the install, as mentioned above. It's possible the installer plugged in the USB to the wrong slot... But, as you said, the iPhone 6 works perfectly fine for Apple CarPlay.
