2015/16 Front Automatic Braking: Does it work when cruise control is not engaged?

I'm getting conflicting information about the Front Automatic Braking option (which is packaged with the Adaptive Cruise Control) on the new Impala. It's not clear from the brochure and even through getting in touch with Chevrolet directly whether Front Automatic Braking works when you are not using the (Adaptive) Cruise Control. So for example, if you are just driving around locally at low speed - without the cruise control on - will the Front Automatic Braking work to help slow the car if it senses a collision - or does it only work if you are using the cruise control. Any help would be appreciated!
