Transmission 2000 Chevy

My van was making hard shifts after driving a while, then the other week the van banged out of drive and wouldn't go. I was able to get off the road got reverse to work and second. Do you think I need s new tranny or could it be a silanoide (sorry don't no how to spell it) it's my only vehicle I would also like to know who you recommend to fix it. I don't have much money as I'm on SSI. Thanks for all you help.
