Transmission Valve Body reassembly pieces parts

Took the wonderful idea of replacing my range sensor into my own hands - cause I'm broke - and now I have a part

that I cannot find a single video or picture/diagram that shows a)what the hell this things is and b) where the hell does it go? Mechanic at AAMCO said it goes on the outboard side of the valve body covering the two small valves (indicated in red) but when I'm searching for a place that seems designed to hold this it seems to belong on the inboard side (indicated in green).
But nothing I've seen tells me yes or no. I'm not putting my transmission back together with a part missing. Someone help me please
