'93 Nissan Sentra auto Transmission problem

I have a fried with a '93 Nissan Sentra, 1.6L auto transmission. The car was working fine with no known issues. One day he left home and the transmission would not shift out of 1st gear. It works fine in reverse, neutral and park. Just won't shift going forward. He took it to a general independent repair shop. They tell him that the transmission is bad and that it needs to be replaced with a used transmission. Does that sound reasonable? Could it be something more simple like a vacuum line or electrical switch?

Thanks,
Dennis
