I have a tundra 4 wheel drive off road 5.7 engine .I get 18 - 20 mpg. all the time on level road with some hills. i drive to conserve gas. 65 to 75 mph.if a person drives 0 to 60 in 6 sec. you.ll get less.what i.m saying is the truth.i have got this milage from day1 now have 6800 miles on it.

II have the 07/ 5.7 crew max 4wd just got back from a 900 mile trip got 16 mpg on the freeway and I get 14 around town. There is only 1500 miles on the truck I expect the mpg to go up with brake in usage this is my first v-8 and going into buying it I knew 381 hp and 400 f p tork would not give me the mpg my v 6 did. But great truck to drive !
  • mfhallmfhall Member Posts: 22
You must have some soft foot! I mean I like to take advantage of my 5.7 power (I have 4x4 LTD) but I'm not always a lead-foot. I average 14-15 MPG (10 mile commute). The only time I see above 17 MPG is on a highway trip and driving under 75.

I'm having the sames problem. I bought my truck Friday 11/16/07 and had to take it back on Monday 11/19/07. The technicians had not heard of the problem and are replacing the fluids and rebalancing the wheels, etc... The guys drove the truck and said they were able to duplicate the problem, but I don't think they know. I explained the noise "like running over a series of small speed bumps". I'm going this afternoon to pick up the truck except now I'm armed with some back-up. I'll give an update tomorrow. I really don't want rebuilt or used parts on my new truck. Hopefully Toyota will take care of the problem.?.?

I just received a call from the dealer and they are telling me their going to replace the transmission. I asked about the 3 day guarantee they offer, but apparently that only applies to vehicles that have not been changed - I added leather..... I told the service guys about the posts I found here and he told me thay are posting on the Toyota bulletin.

Lots of trolls here. Misplaced anger because they don't own the best 1/2 ton on the market. Love my Tundra, ZERO problems and great gas mileage. And I am not being paid to say this!
  • yota4trukyota4truk Member Posts: 34
I'm not a troll, I own 07DCFWDSR5 love everything except the "bounce", if it doesn't bother you, or, you don't notice it, Hey! I am happy for you :) I am more dissapointed that the 08 does the same thing......

    Hi There,
We tow a 19ft Puma and it does a great job. I can even step on it and pass people if I have to. I can say that I don't think your gas mileage will go down. I'd guess you'll get 13-14mpg towing that much. Make sure you use the "tow/haul" mode. I think you're really going to enjoy the power. I have 18k miles on mine now and still loving it!

to post a message if you OWN a 07 tundra ? Well I do OWN a 07 tundra and I am happy to say I am very satisfied with its performance. With any new vehicle there will be issues to work through but I have never felt the need to justify my vehicle by bashing anyone elses. If you feel the need to you might want to check the leval of your maturity and find an alternitive place to post your thoughts. I have OWNED 4 toyota trucks my last was a 95 Tacoma no problems at all with this first year model which I sold this year and bought my 07 FWD crewmax SR5 and I'm glad I did. If I have offended anyone with this post I appologize but feel free to flame me. btw the other 3 toyata trucks I OWNED were problem free as well.
  • jonesbrjonesbr Member Posts: 2
Well Toyota Corp. and the dealer did what it took to make me happy. Turns out the problem was the torque converter. They offered to replace but I did not accept. I returned the 07 and left with an 08 for the same price. Toyota and the dealer worked with me until we found a solution. 08 for 07 price plus a few extras.... O yeah they gave me the 7 year warranty. So far so good.

I've heard that toyota skimped on the frame/chassis and owners are experiencing a bit of ride bounce. any truth to this? i'm planing to buy a new one soon and would like to hear any comments. thanks.
  • anythingbuttoyanythingbuttoy Member Posts: 102
Toyota skimped on just about everything except the safety features and engine. Look at interior quality, exterior paint, sheetmetal, frame, tailgate. The entire truck is cheaply built...but it's "fast". If you want a "go-fast" truck, buy the Tundra, if you want a "Real" truck thats built for real work, buy a GM or Ford. Look past the "outer skin" and it will be obvious.

I have a new Tundra it is a good truck very pleased seems like you want to spend your time on the Toyota forum bad mouthing the Tundra. I owned a new 2004 Z71 that was a lemon. Sold it before the warranty went out now I see on the Chevy GM forum that they are having the same problems that I had and some are replacing the transmission at their cost since the warrany went out. The same problems that I had in my 2004 Z71 they are still having in the 2005 2006 & 2007 so when will GM fix their ongoing problems. The problems I had with GM they told me that it was normal in that truck at least Toyota has recogonized they have some problems but they are fixing them that is more than I can say for what GM has done.

You can read back in time within the posts of this forum for some of those comments. I would suggest that your test drive of the one you want buy over some potholes, speed bumps at least will tell you if the Tundra you're going to purchase was from a good batch. I'm only experiencing a lingering shivering after hitting some 7" deep potholes.. rather than any lingering bounce. Although its different from what I've experieced from other trucks I've owned, its not end of the world. It pulls a trailer just fine. If the one you test drive rides good, that may tell you more than anything you can glean from this forum.. the posts have the sound of more jabber than simply comprising Tundra owners feedback but a lot of those with ulterior motives (salesmen) .. both pro-Toyota and anti-Toyota. Check out some other forums while you're at it.

  • bigkenbigken Member Posts: 7
I have owned my DC4WDSR5 for 6 mos now. I have 10,000 miles on it and I still Love it. Just returned from a three thousand mile trip and averaged 18.4 with it over all. If I drive 75mph+ I get 16 to 17. If I hold it to 65mph I get a consistent 20 to 21.
In the 10,000 miles I have not had my bed shake, nor did I have any trouble seeing my guages in the Florida sun. My transmission shifts smooth as glass, my TRD exhaust rumbles nicely. I am not impressed w/radio, nor the remote start which won't work until you can just about reach out and touch the truck. My tailgate works perfectly and nothing is broken. When I pull my 30 foot travel trailer I get between 11 to 13 mpg depending on how hard I push it. I constantly monitor gas mileage and worst is 9 best is 21.6
  • jerabaubjerabaub Member Posts: 6
    And just love it.

The resources went into engineering, especially the superlative 5.7 liter engine, the innovative six speed transmission, and the oversized brakes, but even the other engines are outstanding(I owned a 2006 Tacoma with the 4.0 engine, and that was a great truck..the engine made the truck pretty quick).

And that is where the emphasis should be. Engineering, not cosmetics.

This truck really rocks. I would buy it all over again. Made the right decision. Acceleration is just outstanding, and the limited has a great sound system.

There are a good number of trolls in here who have to diss the new Tundra, but I am not much concerned by anything they say.
  • mule4mule4 Member Posts: 36
I would like to know what brand of truck you & anythingbuttoy own and if you all bash the ones you drive.I have had the vib.which was the torck converter & was fixed. If it was one of the other brands they would still be telling me it is normal.I think the new chev. is having trouble also. They all have problems But the service you get & the resale value is important.Good luck on what ever you all drive bacause if it's mechanical you will need.

My Tundra didn't come with fog lamps so I'm going to install some aftermarket lights. Question-does the truck come prewired for foglamps?
  • tank5tank5 Member Posts: 10
    Hi:

I had the same problem but the truck corrected itself. I believe that it was the tires.

I have the off road package and the tires are 18 inch bfgoodrich lug tires. The truck was made in march 07 and it only had 9 miles on it to 11/25/07. Getting to the interstate to go home the steering wheel was vibrating badly. It sort of corrected itself after a steady speed of 45 mph. On the interstate it was vibrating badly up to 70 and then it corrected itself. I believe that it was the tires wearing the nubs off. Lug tires are hard to balance but now it is doing fine.

I'll have to do a few things to get better gas mileage in a thousand miles or so, like destroying the 2nd air filter and the mass air sensor, air pressure in the tires.

Any one know of a chip that will get better gas mileage. Usually the factory sets the chip the get the best mileage to fool EPA.

I came out of a 2007 Tacoma regular cab with the 4 cyl and auto. At 70 mph it would get 25.5. Not this truck. But it is much safer and I can haul the grandkids around rather than renting a truck.

...this is the Tundra New Owners discussion. It is NOT "Let's make fun of Tundra owners and their trucks". The same group of people who got several other discussions here closed can't seem to figure this out.

Next step, we start kicking people out of here... understood?

Hi: I thought that my problem of front end vibration on the 2007 SR5 new was a tire. I was correct. The dealer, Bill Penny, in Huntsville, Al ,corrected it by getting me a new tire. Usually they send you to a tire dealer to correct a problem but they corretced it by getting me a new tire at the dealership.

Now if I can just get the MPG up it will be a great truck up from a good truck.

To get better gas mileage Toyota removed the wire screen fron the MAS (Mass Air Sensor). This saved me $300.00 by not having to buy an after market one.!

The MPH is up to 16.7. It is the small V8 with the 5 speed and less than 500 miles. I do mostly highway driving so I Hope to get that up.

    HI
I bought mine friday 11/23, back to dealer 11/26 mon.I had documented 62 slips with the torque converter. They told me if they can't replicate they can't fix it.After seven hours they gave it back. I told them as soon as it slipped i would be back. Twenty minutes later I was back. Service drove it two more times and finally acknowledged the converter. Through thick and thin they have agreed to give me another truck but want me to pay the $800 difference for the tire upgrade. I'm hopeful for resolve! Something about a lessthan a week old truck having the tranny taken out just doesn't sit. How has your situation panned out? Any suggestions?

I've got an '07 Tundra with the 5.7 liter engine. every morning at start up there is significant knocking on take off. this lasts until the engine is warm. Sounds like a diesel....

Spoke with the Toyota service advisor and he said to call Toyota corporate to file a claim of sorts and indicated the engine/pick-up may be replaced.

Has any one else had this issue with the 5.7 liter engine??

    Thanks
  • gobblermangobblerman Member Posts: 10
Yes, I have this to. It is quite common and dare I say it, I believe every one of them has it. It is worse on cold mornings but can be heard in the summer as well. To hear this sound one must start the truck and place it under load within the first few minutes of operation. Until it's placed in Drive you won't hear the sound. Oil selection can quiet it some but not completely. Virtually every 5.7 I've heard from start up has made the noise. The general consensus is this is normal albeit disturbing. There is much on this at tundrasolutions.com but be forwarned they don't like complainers over there. Just search the threads and get you answers.

I was driving down the street yesterday and I heard a whinning sound, has anyone heard this before? Please respond and let me know. Thanks in advance. btw i have a 07,crew max fwd SR5.
  • jerabaubjerabaub Member Posts: 6
I have had my 5.7 engine size Tundra truck for almost 6 months now, and have never heard any knocking. In fact, this truck is supeior to every truck I have ever owned previously, from Ford to Dodge.
I have experienced brief difficulty in getting it into 4 wheel drive(low), but that is probably due to my not reading the instructions carefully, rather than the truck itself.
Overall, I am excited by this truck, and even after owning it for 6 months, still invent "excuses" just to take it out for a drive. I never felt that way about any of my previous trucks.
    I just love it.
  • eric102eric102 Member Posts: 122
No knocking on mine either after 2 months of ownership. Temps around here have been in the 20's and 30's almost every morning and I usually just get in the truck and drive it with no warm up unless it has ice on the windows.

So far no defects or problems.
  • gobblermangobblerman Member Posts: 10
On the whinning noise. I have heard a very high pitched, electronic like noise at certain speeds. The sound is almost inaudible similar to a dog whistle. Is that what your talking about?
  • h20h20 Member Posts: 42
Exactly, someone finally got it. Noises from nowhere.
  • asetechasetech Member Posts: 6
Yes, I have had my 07 tundra for 5 months and every morning it knocks. I pass ny kid at the bus stop in the morning and he said it sounds like a diesel. I will be calling the dealer soon, just hate dealing with loosing the vehicle for a day. Have you complained to the dealer and have they given you any help?

I bought my Tundra double cab, 5.7 liter engine 6 months ago. At 12,000 miles I heard a roaring in the front end and thought it was a wheel bearing. I took it to the dealer and he said it was the tires. At 20,000 miles at the checkup they found a left front wheel bearing bad.. They replaced it and at the time of replacement they found that the differential and the AV axle are going to have to be replaced. They are now replaceing the AV axle and differential right at this moment. I have a issue with the anti slip lights (codes) coming on and Toyota dealer said they could not replace the sensors unless the code lights were on at the time the vehicle was in for service. The codes were on when I took it in this morning. Lastly, When I crank my engine in the AM it sounds like a Diesel engine with a distinct lifter knock. The dealership says it is a good sound as it cannot be adjusted out of the engine. Now What to do. When I get my New 2007 Tundra back tomorrow from the repairs I am going to pursue the lemon law. Is there anyone with these problems or is my Tundra just a lemon.
  • asetechasetech Member Posts: 6
I just dropped my Tundra, 5.7 eng, off at the dealer today. The service writer said he has never heard of anyone complaining about a noise in the morning. I told him to look on the internet and there was more than just myself with that complaint. I guess I can consider myself lucky, I leased for 3 years. My 2004 Chevy was broke down having a camshaft put in at 37,000 miles and I swore I would never buy a domestic again. I like the Toyota truck but I am disappointed with the noise and the transmission does not shift correctly sometimes (mainly if I take my foot off the gas when it is about to shift). I had a 2000 S-10 that GM bought back after 3 months due to the ac not working when I put on the defrost. I called the arbitration number in the back of the owners manual and then sent them the receipts from my times at the dealer. The Lemon law is a bit different. From what I understand you need to have a safety issue that has re-occurred 3 times before the Lemon law can be used. As soon as the dealer calls me I will post their great findings. I will say I m happy that they put me in a rental for free because the vehicle has to be started in the am to hear the noise. I choose Toyota because of their great ratings and I can only hope they will stand behind their product

Got a new 2007 Tundra with the 5.7 motor. The next day it had to go back to the dealer for a low tire pressure light ,they changed a tire senor they claimed was bad,2 days later back to the dealer again for the tire sensor light ,was advised that all sensor would have to be replaced .Dealership gave me another truck to drive so as not to cause any inconvenience to me ,picked my truck up and a couple days later the light was back on.Called the dealer to advise them of the problem and was asked to bring the truck back in at my earliest convenience .A vehicle was given to me to drive while they change the tire pressure receiver and antenna .Picked up my truck and a couple days go by and on comes the light again .Placed a call to the dealer, upon arrival everyone from service manager ,assistant mgr.,service writer and sales mgr.were apologizing for the problem with my truck, again I was given a vehicle to drive .Was advise the ecm would have to be replaced that there must be a communication problem between ecm and the tire pressure receiver .Truck was left at the dealership .Picked up my truck and a few days pass and once again the light comes.A call was made and the truck was taken back to the dealer and this time I was given the manager`s Demo truck to drive until the problem could be located ,a couple of weeks passed and i was advised that calls were made to Toyota`s Tech line and it was determined there were three bad sensor on my truck, the sensors were replaced and all was fine. Team Toyota of Pa. made every effort to satisfy their customer and even tried to get the truck replaced.Ive had a few other problems ,CD player went into a error code 3 mode which Toyota knew about so the radio was replaced. My motor is also noisy when started and a service case was opened with Toyota and was advised due to the design of motor this was a normal thing. Now after reading this you must be asking my thought about my Tundra I would not trade it or get rid of it.I`ve had Chevy,Fords, and Dodge trucks with both gas and diesel motors ,all manufactures have some type of problems with their vehicles it is how the problems are handled that make the difference. All auto makers and die hard customers spend a lot of time bashing each other as a way to sway buyers or hide their own problems. Just look at one of the big 3 who for years has sold 3.1 ,3.4,3.8 and 4.3 litre motors with head and intake gasket problems.(leaks)
  • asetechasetech Member Posts: 6
Toyota called me today to pick up my truck from the service department. Upon arrival I was informed 1st that I had a transmission leak and I now have a driveshaft and seal on order-(very odd as I never saw or complained about a leak). The morning noise was heard and the service writer changed his story today to say that " Yes, I have heard many Tundra's make noise and mine was not as bad as others." Just yesterday he told me he had never heard of any complaints with the 5.7 engine. He also told me that the Toyota rep has been called and I now have a case. He told me to expect a call in the next couple of days and he expects the rep will give permission to tear down the engine.
I Will get another Toyota when this lease is up. I think there is something to the old addage, Never buy the new model for the 1st year it comes out, they are still working out the bugs. I think when all is said and done it will be a great truck.
  • gobblermangobblerman Member Posts: 10
I'm not sure I would want my engine torn down for this noise nor would I trust someone who has changed his story. So many have been told this is a normal noise and while I don't like it I am willing to live with it provided they all have this trait and it doesn't effect longevity. On the other hand if they fix the noise in your engine it is an admission of a lot of bad engines. Keep us posted
  • h20h20 Member Posts: 42
I agree with what you have said gobblerrman but would like to add that as asetech said not to buy first model year I did buy a 1995 tacoma first model year and only the head gaskets replaced under warrenty. Now that being said asetech also mentioned the next truck he/she would buy after the problems with this tundra would be a toyota and I support he/she on this decision since I have owned four toyota trucks and have been happy with all of them. Its nice to discuss problems without slamming on other manufactures or being sarcastic and rude. Thanks H20

I have a 2007 5.7 engine no knocks any time engine great 7200 miles on it. Only problem had a torck converter put in it . this is a good truck .

Hi Guys, Im a chick and know this...I bought the 07 5.7 double cab because I tow boats for a living. The thing tows like nothing is back there. That noise is all those 32 valves doing their job with the double overhead cam, These valves move twice as much as a chevy dog,and to the tranny shifting problem guy when letting off the gas. Its a 6 speed trans and does a lot of shifting. Very touchy. Just drive it like you stole it and it wont let you down.Im wondering if these have a governer cause when Im going down hill and let off the gas it seems to brake for a quick moment. Im sure of it. Comon' its a Toyota. Mine is leased, still under warranty, no worries....Thats my story and im stickin to it....I hope my engine is really OK.....LOL

My Tundra(1300miles) was shifting funny going up my driveway at about a 45 degree angle.
Dealer put in a new torque converter. This seemed to fix the problem except now after I get to the top of the driveway (only about 30 feet) I feel a slipping then it goes into gear. After I drive another 100 feet it starts to "bounce" like "popping the clutch" in manual transmissions for a few times. Then all is normal!! Dealer has been great and came to my home because they could not replicate the driveway angle at the dealership. I feel like a real dummy as (wouldn't you know it) it didn't do it for him!!! Toyota (California) has been extremely nice and are willing to even give me a new tranny if there is a problem, BUT I guess now they think I am a wacko? Believe it or not it has done this everytime but only in the morning when everything is cold. I am sure some of you will say I am a wacko also since it didn't do it for the service manager. I would appreciate all comments from the few people who might believe me as I am starting to NOT believe myself!!!!! Thanks.
  • jerabaubjerabaub Member Posts: 6
I have never had any problem with the transmission, except temporary slight difficulty in getting it into 4 wheel drive(low). But even that is trivial..due more to my failure to pay attention to the owners' manual.

I have no doubt many people who post here actually own new Tundras. I also have no doubt that many don't, and either are paid by Toyota competitors, or thru envy, are compelled to criticize the vehicle.

I have personally owned Ford and Dodge pick-up trucks. NEVER have I owned or driven a truck that is as exciting, dependable, exhilarating, and fun to drive, as my 2007 Toyota Tundra Limited doublecab, 4 wheel drive, 5.7 liter engine.

On a grade scale, my previous trucks were "C-", or "D". My Tundra is an "A'.

    Enough said.
  • jwinnerjwinner Member Posts: 7
Yes, I love my truck too. Just have this strange problem with the tranny and ONLY when it sits for about 8 hours. I wouldn't be concerned except I worry about the future and what it may bring???
  • mule4mule4 Member Posts: 36
I also believe that some posters on this forum are here to bash the new Tundra that do not own one or have never driven one. I have a new Tundra 5.7 4 wheel drive 7200 miles only had a torc converter replaced no other problems. It drives and pulls as good or better than any other half ton pick up. There was a poster on here calling himself anythingbuttoy all he did was bash the Tundra. Some things he said
I believe was made up. One recent post was the engine sounding like a diesel and since then there has been a couple more posters saying the same thing. It is like a copy cat.
  • gobblermangobblerman Member Posts: 10
I can assure you guys and gals that I am the owner of my 07 DC 5.7 4x4. I have not said it is a bad truck. I personally am excited about my Tundra. But with an investment this big I discriminate and fuss over things that seem out of the ordinary. I am accepting that some things are normal. (The woodpecker sound on startup, the sometimes confused trans. shifting and the occasional drive line clunk). My only real complaints are the poorly designed tailgate for those of us that intend to put weight on it and the paint that scratches and chips far to easily. I love the power, traction control, fuel economy, towing, look and even the interior is growing on me but I do think my T100 was a bit more durable. In 12 years after 200,000+ miles I'll know then if it measured up like my T100 did.

For what it is worth, I have been reading the comments from some of the "bashers" and taking it with a grain of salt. Most is to try and make us second guess our choice in truck or tick us off. Some of it is actually useful. I have owned my truck since April, I have 31,000 km on it and other than regular maintenance I have had no issues that needed service. I have noticed a little bed bounce, a little shift change "irregularity", I do notice the down shifting when I take my foot of the accelerator going down steep hills, no morning noise, I have no issue with the instrument cluster and the gas mileage is still averaging 20 mpg (Canadian). This is a truck, not a lexus sedan. I still get contractors and guys wanting to look inside and ask 'how do you like that truck' and they all drive something else and say they really are looking at making it their next purchase, especially when the desiel comes out. This is a serious high performance truck, it has a few flaws, I can live with them and I'd buy it again if I had to. Even my wife likes it and she does care about vehicles, I don't actually let her drive it though. She just navigates. Like I've said before I have owned two other toyotas and this is by far the best truck of the bunch. DC TRD 5.7 :)

Well put ! This is my fourth toyota truck and by far the biggest and strongest. Issues come with all new vihicles.

My friend has had his since March, don't know the mileage but it hasn't been back to the dealer for anything yet. I've borrowed it once and walked away very impressed with its power, ride and interior space. It's a tight, solid driving truck.
