Is it true you don't want to torque axle nuts all the way?

I was told that if you torque an axle nut all the way you will decrease the new wheel bearing life is this true?A friend who works with a new tech grad. had this problem w/ a subaru and the grad. said they were taught this about after market wheel bearings in his school

That "depends " on the vehicle one is referring to. With a lot of the Subaru's it is definitely true, the bearing will have excessive pre-load after it has been run a while if you remove and fully re-torque the axle nut. There are many more manufacturers that are immune to this. It all depends on whether the bearing preload is set by the axle nut or not.5
