I'm looking for a small SUV and have narrowed it down to the Subaru Forester (2.5i Premium) and Mazda CX-5 (Touring). I'm a city driver, have a toddler, and live in the Northeast, so we're looking for something that isn't too big but has enough space for road trips, etc., and does well in winter. I like the Mazda's zippy handling, interior styling, and fuel economy. And I like the Subaru's slightly bigger backseat, visibility, and safety ratings. Both seem like good picks. The one question mark I have is about reliability. I've been reading that Subaru has had issues with excessive oil consumption and JD Power recently dinged them on Vehicle Dependability and Initial Quality. Do you know if they've fixed the oil consumption issue in the 2016 models? Is it expected/typical that you need to top off in between oil changes with a Subaru (something I've seen mentioned on some forums)? Overall, which of these two cars is more reliable?
