I had the same kind of noise and we even opened the door panel thinking the window mechanism was awry. Then we took out the glove compartment and pursued stuff behind it. Put it all back and the gremlin was still rattling. Ended up we found it. It was a bolt lose in the running board allowing it to vibrate on the body and sounding like it was inside.

Check the front passenger seat belt (if riding alone) mine was tapping the door post when I hit a bump. Put a little piece of Velcro on the back of it and all fixed.

Hey I had the same problem. Thought some thing was loose but it was the seatbelt hitting the side. Scott

After reading the post about the glovebox discoloration I went out and looked at mine, it was identical to yours. I have a 05 d-cab 4x2 prerunner.

Has anyone found an attractive option for adding an aftermarket audio system to the large, curving silver panel that holds the factory AM/FM CD? Thinking about getting Sirius and don't really like the separate pod you can add in front of the dash near the shift lever. A lot of what Best Buy already stocks would end up looking like the hillbillie armor they're putting on Hummers in Iraq.

I don't know what it's going to look like but I found this info. off of another forum, hope it helps. I'm still waiting for them to update the site.

Finally, Scosche is working on an installation kit for the 2005 Toyota Tacoma. The kit will be released in December of this year.

All of Scosche’s installation kits have been thoroughly researched and designed to give a factory fit for each vehicle. The quality and perfect fit installers and enthusiasts have come to expect from Scosche continue with the new kits.

Just picked up my Double Cab 4x4 auto with the Off-Road Package #2. I had to wait over a month for it to come in(it had to be white). options include 6-disc changer, bed mat, Exhaust tip, and floor mats. Invoice price was $26,688. I paid $27,008 which includes $144 for dealer locate fee, $124 title & doc fee and a few pennies over invoice for the dealer. I know they have there holdbacks, but I still thought this was a good deal. Another dealer was going to charge me around $700+ over invoice.

I love the truck. Rides great! Steering wheel seams a little close to the dash, but no big deal. It's nice to have all the useful storage compartments inside. Maybe I'll actually be able to keep all my tools organized in my truck.

My truck is a access cab and the problem is in the alignment of the passenger side cab mounting bolt. The bolt is rubbing on the body when you hit bumps this problem will not be as noticeable when you have a passenger with you the fix is to remove the bolt 17mm jack the cab off the frame and realign the mounting bracket 14mm a job for the dealer

Thank you for the reply. Do you know where I can get more information on this? Any TSBs or anything? Thank you!
  • tarboroheel1tarboroheel1 Member Posts: 12
I read it on another board that the problem you have has been releted to the skid plate and that Toyota has stopped production on it until they can remedy the problem. Have the dealer take it off and I'll bet you the problems go away.
  • tarboroheel1tarboroheel1 Member Posts: 12
Did they look forever bofore finding this problem on your truck? Mine has already been in two different times and they thought they had it fixed both times, but they didn't. Is there a TSB, or is this just what your dealer found on your truck. I've seen where on other boards, this problem is kinda widespread. Thanks for all the info, it will come in handy when I head back to the dealer.
  • tjctjc Member Posts: 3
They worked on my truck for 2 days before finding the problem. The dealership Joe Machens toyota opened a file up on my truck with toyota. I would think you will see a TSB soon

All of these issues are all seem small, but is anyone concerned or just new model kinks? I have driven the Taco several times because I love the look and want to buy a Toyota, but I am concerned about quality (which is why I wanted a Toyota in the first place). The first test drive left me unimpressed, but with all the great reviews I made another attempt. The next Taco (sport DC) was much quieter and less engine noise (reminded more of my BMW, I don't mind hearing the engine some), but there was a lot of road feel in the steering wheel. It may be the suspension and tire package, but the sport package offers most of what I want. I don't like all the limitation Toyota puts on the consumer on what you can and can't get of each truck. Shouldn't you be able to order the truck you want? Also, I would love a sunroof, leather and a power rear window (the Tundra rear window is awesome). I need something that is a great daily driver and allows me to play on the weekend. I am looking forward to Frontier test drive as they should be arriving to dealers anytime.

Well, Consumer Reports usually finds at least one or two defects in any new model, not just a complete re-design. I think a few defects are acceptable (when fixed). Think how many processes and details go into making a vehicle. A lot of things have to go right, for there to be only one or two things not quite up to standards.

So, anyone going to put a larger tire size on their TRD Sport trucks? I was just starting to wonder what the largest tire size is, without modification or rubbing.

I have a 4x4 double cab 6 speed manual transmission 05 Tacoma, just curious when shifting specially from 1st to 4th gear I could hear extra metallic grinding annoying sounds,I depressed the clutch pretty good but still could hear it.I have 230 miles now,Any ideas folks? Greatly appreciated...
  • ltmarltmar Member Posts: 45
Although you shouldn't normally shift from 1 to 4, if you allow the shifter to properly pass through neutral on the way, there shouldn't be any noise. Depressing the clutch pretty good is not good enough, you have to depress it all the way.
  • brandogbrandog Member Posts: 7
I had the same noise shortly after I picked up my DC Lb 4x4 in Oct. Took it to dealer 3x they couldn't figure it out!I had the noise on the right side seemed to be less evident in rain.I took a spray bottle with water sprayed each cab mount on the right side separately then test drove, noise stopped after I sprayed first mount, right front just behind the front tire. Took it to dealer they checked it and removed mount insulated it and re installed No more noise

I am taking mine back to the shop tomorrow. I will tell them about the cab mount bolts and see if they can fix it.

I ordered a Tacoma double cab, long-bed, with the PK-Package / TRD Sport package in 4X4. Is there a big difference between the TRD Sport and Off-Road package, and is a 16” size wheel better than a 17” wheel?

    Thanks in advance.

I took my truck into the dealer today to ask about the glove box discoloration. The service manager observed that it looked like something had been spilled on the glove box and he asked if I was certain it was this way when I received the truck. I told him it was and I also mentioned that several people on this message board had noted the same problem -- same place and same shape. He said he would order me a new glove box lid today and when it comes in he will confirm that it is without defect and will then give me a call. He gave me the option of having their interior specialists (who are at the dealership once a month) take a crack at repairing the finish, but I said I wanted to make sure Toyota was aware of the problem. Now we'll see if Toyota has any non marred glove box covers and if the color matches mine.

I've seen three that they have ordered for mine---all the same. Tech person is coming to the dealership to make a report. I'll post back when I hear something new. Miller Toyota in Manassas, VA

    P265/65R17 TRD Sport Package tires

    P265/70R16 TRD Off-Road Package tires

The total diameter for both of these wheel/tires are substantially the same (important for your speedometer/odometer readings). Here's how it figures:

The 265 is the section width in mm, basically the width from sidewall to sidewall. The 65 and 70 are the sidewall heights expressed as a percentage of the section widths, and of course, the 16 and 17 are the wheel diameter in inches.

265 mm calculates to about 10.43 inches.

    10.43 x .65 = 6.78" sidewall height on the 265/65

    10.43 x .70 = 7.30" sidewall height on the 265/70

Multiply the sidewall height by 2 for the total (top and bottom) = 13.56" and 14.6" respectively (difference of 1 inch). Add the 17" and 16" wheel diameters and you get 30.56" and 30.6" respectively.

Consumers Reports had a good article on tire sizes, a few issues back. They said that you could increase the wheel size by 1" with very little loss in rideability. This explains why several people here report that they felt a tad better ride in the off-road model. The increase in the wheel size of the Sport package gives better handling/control.

I put the factory roof rack on yesterday so far no noise. Cross bars stow along the side when not using them.If you put it on yourself be careful with the two front bolts that screw into the hardware bracket, they come with locktite on them and it makes them difficult to screw in.I wire brushed off the original locktite and re applied liq locktite made the bolts go in easy.Didnt have to remove the locktite from any of the other bolts they went in easy

After 7 weeks of waiting, got my Dcab 6 spd in TRD Sport package. Those of us in the NE get their trucks last I guess. Obvoiusly rides nice. No unsual noises, other than the slight ticking from motor when mashing gas. Has 87, will put Hi test in to see if it helps. Took on 50 miles of backroads of beat pavement and hilly snow covered gravel roads. 4wd works smoothly, those Dueler H/T tires are ok, but not the best in real snow country. I'll be swapping out my 17' tires for the winter and putting on a set of narrower 245/70 /16 Blizzak Winter duelers on steel rims. Despite some folks complaints about the 6spd manual, I love it, no problems for me, just no short clutching, gotta put the pedal to the floor. Complaints, small rear window with back right headrest making a blindspot. No locking gas door or cap? Not that I'm paranoid, but should have one. Temperature display is 5-8 degrees off, and can't adjust it.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I wouldn't mind having some tube steps on my double cab. Not only do I think it will upgrade the looks but I also think it will also help on the wear on my seat. At 5'6" I kinda slide out of the seat and prop myself up almost a "3-point sit" to get in lol. So I think they are good to have for more than just looks.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Nice write up. My temp display seems to be a little off too. A little disappointing to hear there is no way to adjust it. I have the Off Road Pkg, so I don't know about the Dueler tires. The BFGs on the Off Road seem to be adequate so far as I have had no real test for them yet, but it would be nice to have a LT rated tire. They will do until they wear out though. I have an auto but I would be interested in hearing more about the 6-speed impressions. Congrats on the new truck!
  • nickt1nickt1 Member Posts: 32
I have a similar noise coming from that exact same spot--it's like a pop or a rattle when the truck goes over bounces, but it only happens when the temp's below freezing. Had it in the shop all day yesterday, and they couldn't find it. I have another appointment next week--I'm going to tell them to check the rear passenger side cab mount bolt.

Hey Taborheel. I am stringbender here but Poman on the Colorado Forum. I wrote in a few times on the rado board compaining about some minor isues and whining noises out of the engine but either I am getting used to it or it's quitened down. I am still driving my Colorado and still enjoying the great mpg and performance but due to concerns of long term reliablility I am still half way, considering a Tacoma or Tundra in the future. I am also cocerned about my AC not cooling enough for Texas summers, last summer it had a hard time cooling the cab and we had a faily mild summer, no 112 degree days. It would be nice to have a quiter vehicle also, as I am like you and hate rattles. Now,I am just sitting back now and following the Tacomoa and Tundra forums to see how they are holding up in the real world. How do you think that it compares to your X rado as far as ride and performance? Of course you can't test the AC yet but I will be following this forum to see if the ac is cold enough to do the job. Good Luck with your new Tacoma, if it's like most Toyoatas it will be running a long long long time.
  • wilcoxwilcox Member Posts: 582
Well, I guess I really need to try out a few of these using some of my workmates trucks. Maybe they take some getting used to.

And, if they are any good, then maybe once there are some good choices for newer Tacomas out there I'd consider one. Who knows, Perhaps one of those little step stirrups might be practical...

Has anybody looked into fitting 20' wheels to their 05 Tacos yet? Does anyone know the correct "PCD" and wheel offset to ascertain what wheels are available.
  • tarboroheel1tarboroheel1 Member Posts: 12
You can get 20s from Toyota. They are made by Enkei. I have seen them and though I am not the type of guy to put on 20s, I think they do look good.
  • tarboroheel1tarboroheel1 Member Posts: 12
All I can say is don't hesitate to trade for either a Tacoma or a Tundra. I made a big mistake when I traded my first Tacoma for the GMC Canyon. To me the Canyon was very cheaply built. That truck seemed to be thrown together. I know there are people out there that own Collys and Canyons without fault, but my new Tacoma outclasses it by a long shot. I will say the the Canyon had a more plush ride over hard bumps, but that is about the only check I can give it when comparing the Tacoma. Better handling, more power by far, better fit and finish. Only complaint I have is the knocking noise which it is in the shop for right now. They called and said it was fixed and that is was the cab mount bolts. Go and Test drive a Tacoma, it'll be like a luxury car compared to the Colly. Gas mileage is about the same, I can't tell the difference. And if considering a Tundra, I am driving one right now while mine is in the shop and it's nice too. I've driven it for 2 days and have zero complaints. I like it just as much as the Taco. It's the Access Cab with TRD off road package. If I wasn't worried too much about Gas mileage, I would have loved the Tundra.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I agree about the Canyon and Colorado's build quality. GM missed the mark in that area again. This is my first Toyota (coming from a Ranger and a S10 Crew) and dispite the what seems to be very minor issues (it's expected on a new model) I am very impressed. It has much less issues than the new F150 I was going to buy. I also considered the Tundra but the gas mileage was a huge turn off. That thing is a gas hog! IMO you can't go wrong with the Tacoma. I am/was a die hard American truck owner but even I am sold on the Tacoma.

I recently bought My 05 Tacoma sport 4x4 automatic at Joe Machens Toyota in Columbia MO and it has several problems as well.

Rattling noise from engine under acceleration (exhaust manifold?)

Rattling noise over bumps from something sounding loose in access cab behind driver.(bolt?)

Vibration through cab at highway speed intermitant (skid plate? with wind?)

Starter seems to crank excessivly to start

Auto Trans seems to "lug" down when decelerating then release (is this normal?)

I've gotten "this is normal" speech already from the dealership but I have an appointment on the 3rd of January to track these issues down. I added 265/70/17 Brig Duel'rs and I expect them to say this is where the vibration is coming from, but it was there before. I have 500 miles on the truck so far and I'm shocked I have issues already. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I depressed the clutch fully when shifting, still i'm just frustrated specially when shifting 1st to 2nd and to 3rd this metallic sound upon engagement. But during 4th to 5th and to 6th noise dissapears totally,I have an appt. Monday, what possibly could they do to eliminate this extra noises...thanks...

    tarboroheel1:

Can you tell us what they did to fix the cab mount bolts? Is the noise gone?
  • abvelvabvelv Member Posts: 9
I am very interested in the fix as well. I just returned from the dealer and they indicated they "checked" all body mounts and couldn't find the problem. I even printed all the messages related to the noise for them to read.
  • abvelvabvelv Member Posts: 9
I have a DC SB with automatic. I have only used 2 tanks of fuel so far and have used premium both times. So far, I've gotten a little over 15 mpg. I'm hoping it improves as I get more miles on it. For those of you who have had your Tacomas for a while, is this as good as it gets, do I need to lower my expectations?

    Thanks
  • oldindiansfanoldindiansfan Member Posts: 5
All I really listen to is MP3s. I have a portable player and in my old car I hooked it up using a casette adapter but the tacoma doesnt even have a cassete deck. I tried an fm transmitter before and it sucked. Any suggestions?
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I have a 4x4 Doublecab Shortbox as well and I am getting about 18MPG. I have not quite 2K miles on her so far. I would think that your mileage as well as mine for that matter will increase. I know in my old trucks (domestics) it took at least the first 5K miles for the truck to break in, I would think it's about the same for the Taco. Your mileage should increase unless you drive like an Indy 500 driver. By the way, I have been using premium also.
