Buzzing or vibration coming from gear selector?

Hi all, 2006 GS, when I shift into Drive there is a strange buzzing or high pitched vibrating sound coming from somewhere forward of the gear shift. If I gently push the column shifter upwards (towards N) the sound goes away. When I gently pull the shifter downward the noise returns.

Any thoughts?
