Acura certainly needs to have designs more appealing, and vehicles that are more competitive. If Acura doesn't turn it around, it will have the same future as Scion!

This sounds like a dramatic change in exterior (and maybe interior) looks, but I doubt if this is more than a mid-cycle refresh in terms of the mechanicals and chassis... the current MDX has only been out for less than 3 years.

Uhhh... I think you are mistaking your personal preference for the actual current trajectory of Acura's success.
1- Acura's 2015 sales figures were their best since 2007 (right before the recession hit and all luxury brand sales went down)... 177k vehicles. Up 5.2% from 2014.
2- The MDX is the best selling 3 row luxury SUV in the US. Sales volume was down from 65k units to 58k units 2014 vs 2015, but that's status quo for a luxury vehicle... the first year of a new body style is almost always the best selling year.
3- Acura's 177k units sold in 2015 are about equal to Scion's 2013, 2014 and 2015 sales totals COMBINED. Let's not forget that profit margin on an Acura vehicle is many times that of a Scion for both the manufacturer and the dealer... so while Acura is 'only' selling 3 times as many vehicles as Scion, they're probably bringing in 10 times as much gross profit.

so if scion was loosing money, is acura losing 10 times as much?

You need to look up the definition of gross profit.
