Trooper voltage drop on long drive?

I have a 1997, 3.1 diesel, manual Trooper and I LOVE IT! However, on a longish run (90 miles) my voltage Meter dropped to just over 8v and the ABS light came on. I have recently changed the alternator belt as the old one was worn and fraying. The truck has been fine since the belt change but hadn't really done a long trip. I nursed her home, all the while praying she wouldn't let me down. A few mile from home I drove through a large puddle and everything came to life again and she purred home. Could this be an alternator problem and the water washed something out??? I am a fairly good amateur mechanic, but certainly no expert!
