Engine runs on after I let off the gas

I have a 2004 PT Cruiser. It runs fine, doesn't burn oil but there is a serious problem. While driving and approaching a stop, the engine continues to run at high RPM's even after you let off the gas. It remains running at a high RPM for 4-6 seconds after you release the accelerator. After that, it returns to a slightly higher than normal idle speed. What could be causing this?

The butterfly valve in your throttle body is probably sticking and needs a good cleaning.

Easy fix is to go to auto parts store and purchase a can of Gumout brand carb and choke cleaner iin the aeresol can. Describe the symptom to the person behind the counter and they can tell you how to fix (Remove air box, spray into throttle body.

Google "cruiser valve body clean" for lots of online help.

Alternative problem is you have a bent or bindng cable. If you car has 350,000 miles and has had ten previous owners and a history of accidents or salvage title, theres a good possibility that you have some problems with the cable that conncts the gas pedal to the throttle body. Pay a professional to fix.

This is a pretty dangerous thing to have your engine keep revving after letting up pn the gas. Investigate and resolve IMMEDIATELY.
