2014 Mazda 3 (sport) vs 2015 Hyundai Elantra(SE)

this is an open poll w/ disscussion !
Please feel free to post your opinions and questions regarding the topic.
Im an amateur car buyer, and im buying my first car (used)
the cars im narrowed down on are a mazda3 / Hyundai.
quick notes ; Hyundai has 9k miles, seems to be mainly driven in the Chicago area (stop and go traffic etc) otherwise carfax is clean and good.
the Mazda 3 sport has 15k miles and seems to be mainly driven around Fort Worth Texas. Carfax is again very clean.
really important to me is just reliability and gas milage. Both these cars claim to be great at both, discusse and toss some opinions my way.
