AT Temp light on. Car proceeds in low gear.

Hi all,
2002 Legacy in 91 degree stop and go traffic on a moderate slope.
AT Temp comes on. Possibly not flashing (just on). Wife was driving...
Car stops proceeding.
Helper puts car in low gear, car proceeds, and he manages to get car off the road.
After cooling down car runs as normal, and light is off.
Helper said AT fluid level was OK. I haven't checked it myself.
Fluid is low?
Some kind of AT fluid pump is bad??
Tranny is "slipping" ??
