I'm a bit of a homer about Volvo because I had had an extremely bad crash in one (not of my own doing...). But I can remember watching a comparison of an S Class, a small Europe-only Volvo, and a tiny VW. Each had accident avoidance/emergency breaking. The VW's system was very basic so it wasn't so much a comparison with the other two as a benchmark of the lower end of the market. The Volvo did handily outdo the S Class though. Knowing how much effort they put into their cars, I still tend to believe the Volvo is safer. I know that the only person who died in the previous model, died when the car left the road, and jumped into a tree. As a result, the new model has seats that are designed to absorb the impact of a jump, while protecting the spine. When Volvos were dumpy, slow cars I could see getting the Acura. But the new ones are really nice and have beautiful interiors. I'll drive my kids around in one as long as I can afford to.
