Brake Pedal Engaged

I changed the brake pads on my Escape yesterday and followed the instructions to a tea. After doing so, I noticed that as driving I had to keep pumping up the brakes like there was air in the lines. I bled the brakes and that did not make any difference. My wife drove it today and not the brake pedal has engaged and it will not come up. Any clue as to what my problem is?
