1993 VW Golf CL 1.6i vs 2001 Citroen Saxo 1.1

Hi ! I'm looking for some help please.! I need reliability, safety and economy. Agreed to buy the Citroen which is ideal for my needs but suddenly I have been offered the Golf which only has 76,000 km on the clock (the Citroen has more than 150,000). Everyone says "buy the Golf" but I'm terrified of its age. Thoughts and advice from someone would be so very helpful as I have to make the decision by Wednesday. Thanks.
