The 2016 Toyota 4Runner and Lexus GX 460 SUVs will be subject to future Takata recalls for defective front airbag inflators by 2018, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. said in an update late last week.

    I'm a bit surprised that Joan Claybrook hasn't been more vocal on the issue of manufacturers selling new cars with "known safety issues." I can imagine the heat being put on the NHTSA.

    Reports are that it's going to take until 2020 for all the defective airbags to be replaced, and that's assuming that Takata doesn't go bankrupt and fold.

    So a new 2016 owner may have to wait four years to allay any concerns about whether their airbag will work in a crash. What a mess.
