A/C and temp guage quit and cooling fan starts!

Randomly, but more commonly at highway speeds, the a/c stops blowing cool air (a bad thing here in FL!) and at the same time the temp gauge stops working and drops down to 0. After disconnecting the battery for 5-10 mins (as suggested by my sister! ~ embarrassing!) it resets and I'm good until it happens again. Also the cooling fans starts running until the ignition is turned off, but comes on again when I restart, until I do the battery disconnect/reset again.
Anyone got any ideas? She's too old to put in the shop for a new computer. Thanks anyone with a suggestion!
