  • I agree that any kind of indicator ON a mirror surface is less than ideal...typically, when you use a rearview mirror, interior or exterior, your eyes are focused at infinity or close to it, while the indicator on the mirror is like three feet away if not closer, so it's out of focus.

    I'm normally not a fan of the Helen Keller suites of driving aids, but I can at least tolerate the blind spot monitoring as BMW configures it.

  • That is a good way for it to work. I sometimes, on long highway trips, will turn my signal on when someone is in my blind spot if they are taking too long to pass and we're coming up on a slower vehicle that I want to pass, just to tell them to get on with it. So a beep would not be welcome in that case.
  • I've had a few loaners equipped with the caution light on the sides of the side-view mirrors. I like it. It's not as obtrusive as a chime inside the cabin or as confusing a message as a seat vibration. Moreover, it's effective. It's right where the eye is (or needs to be) when an obstacle is detected.
