I am wondering too. If the budget is tight, try a used Toyota or Nissan, especially if you want a 4X4. The best advice, is to drive everything you can first, and remember that according to the salesman you're talking to, HIS brand is always trouble free and a great buy. Don't get in a hurry.

Have owned trucks all my life - nearly 50 years worth. The new 4-door models are just about as convenient as trucks may ever become. Mine is a 1999 F-150 4X4 (5.4) and I have no complaints. There are more out there too and more coming. Like the other posts - need to get out and look.

What price range, function(offroad, towing, or just want one), and full size or small truck?

Too many vague needs that aren't listed. But with that said, maybe a compact truck since you sound unsure how much you might use it. Just a thought.....

Everyone I know that as bought a standard cab truck wishes they would have looked a little closer at the Super cab or extended cab. How hard you plan on working the truck should drive you not only by what you do today but as well as what you may do in the next few years. Are you maybe thinking of a boat or a trailer of some sort?
If so I would consider something full size. And if you do forsee towable toys or a camper, How big
a toy are we talkin? If it's bigger or weighs alot
don't under power the truck. Step up to a larger displacement motor or even a diesel.
I have always had great luck with full size trucks. The cost difference in less mpg and the added saftey for yourself, family and friends is also worth the extra to me.

No doubt about it. The first truck for any budding truck fan is a... Tonka!

    Tonka! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I don't think anyone really has to ease into being
a pickup person. If you can drive a car, you can drive a pickup. I would go with a full-size half-ton. They cost a little more, but they get just as good mpg and have more utility.

I doubly agree with post 10! Support your NRA or lose your 2nd Amendment!

    That's right Bud,
And as you know, without the second--the rest aren't worth a damn. I always get into discussions about these stickers since I do a lot of contracting in and around Philadelphia. I can tell that the liberal weenies, who truly believe in censorship with their Polictical Correctness, can't stand tehse signs of freedom.
What probably irritates these slicksters is that a buisness firm supports the NRA and not just hillbillies. Keep the support coming!!

If the young driver is handy, get them a truck with a carburetor instead of fuel injection. This way, repairs could be cheap and done by you or some friends.
