You just rip the CD to your network drive at a high bit rate or losslessly, put it on a thumb drive or SD card, and it sounds as good as the CD. Spotify? Nuh-uh.

Its definitely a trade off. I use Spotify and think it works great, but nothing wrong with have a USB disk full of music at whatever quality you want. The one reason where I could see it being a serious issue is if you rent a lot of Books-on-CD from the Library as you'd have to find a PC (not many people have them anymore either) and rip them (illegally, I'm sure) to your device.

But, having a whole bunch of CDs in your car? LOL, come on.

I have yet to hear a digital medium that sounds as nice as a cd for listening to music in a car. Satellite radio, mp3s, any kind of streaming service sound like [non-permissible content removed]. I have an ipod with .wav files that does sound ok but it still isn't as good as a cd. I have done a-b comparisons and a cd sounds fuller, clearer, and better dynamic range. I think a big reason is it uses the ipod's DAC that isn't that good and is optimized for headphones and not an open area. Would be nice if car manufacturers put more effort in the digital processing of their sound systems.
