Repair of a driveshaft

Hi everyone. I really would like some help. I have a 2000 Honda CRV with 341,000 miles on it. I love this car. I brought my daughter home from the hospital in it when she was born and now I'm teaching her to drive on it. Pretty cool. I'd like to continue to keep this car if I can. The other day when I was driving in the neighborhood, the drive shaft broke and fell. Didn't completely fall out, but one end broke (I think it was a U joint?) and made a tremendous noise. Car still drove fine and no lights came on. Brought it to an automotive place and they said a new drive shaft is $900. My question is this. Do I need to replace it or can I just pull it out and keep going? I think it's the drive shaft that makes it go from 2WD to 4WD. I don't need the 4WD. So can I just pull it out and keep going without messing something up or causing more damage or do I need to do something else or have it replaced? Thanks in advance.
