Transmission problem

have had this 2007 Grand Prix since new. Always had service done on schedule. Just hit 79000 miles and went out the other day and car wouldn't move in drive. Reverse was fine, 1st and 2nd were ok but would not start in drive from a dead stop. Tried resetting the computer and checked the fluid levels. All were good. Took it to the shop and they said the transmission pump was shot and it needed a new transmission. Going to cost $2800. Car was never driven in a crazy manner or did any heavy pulling. Not good GM. Having read the other posts it seems like this is a common theme. Won't be buying another GM product again.
