2005 Dodge Dakota drops out of overdrive

Folks,

Intermittently, my 05 Dodge Dakota drops out of overdrive when I let off the accelerator and gets stuck in 3rd. This is accompanied by a loud thud but is fine after turning off my vehicle and restarting it.

Advice appreciated

from what I know about it.. your overdrive shuts off if your tranny is getting too hot You can check your transmission fluid as a first step. I also believe you must check the fluid in neutral for dodges
