Easy DIY Windshield Chip Repair

While most car washes now days will fix your windshield chips for free, it does involve a call to your insurance company. That’s all well and good if you don’t mind a windshield claim, but I’d rather not.

There are several windshield chip repair kits on the market these days, and you can find them in stores like PepBoys, AutoZone, and even WalMart. As of this writing the price starts at around 10 bucks. Although some of them say you can repair a crack, unless it’s very small (smaller than a dime) you’re better off getting windshield crack repair from an expert. The things I’m talking about specifically are the little chips you get from driving through construction zones or behind a trash truck.

Each chip repair kit includes clear instructions. I’m just here to give you the tips on how to make sure it all comes out just right.
• Make sure the area is dry
• Make sure the area is dry (yes, it’s that important)
• Work at temperatures between 70 and 100 degrees; optimal is right around 80 to 85
• Work in the shade (or your garage)
• Make sure your work area is well ventilated
• Clean the area with rubbing alcohol (let it dry)
• If you need to, use a hair dryer to remove any lingering moisture
• Have all tools on hand before you start the job
• Read and follow the directions carefully

Most of the kits are simply fillers that you force down into the chip then allow to cure. The process is simple if you catch the chip before it becomes a crack!

If this post has helped you, please let me know.

Thanks.
