sporadic ac operation

My 2011 Nissan maxima has 116000 miles on it. While accelerating to pass a vehicle the ac cut out and then did not come back on. The compressor had went bad so I had it replaced. Now, with a brand new compressor, the car's ac comes on after a period of time or maybe not at all after you turn the ac on. I noticed that when I started the car and began driving that the ac may take several miles before it even starts cooling. I was at an idle the last time it actually came on and the whole car shuddered and bogged down as it started. Any ideas on what is causing this?
