Vehicle made a small noise - now won't drive forward, or even REV - will drive in reverse though

Got stranded this morning. Had no issues with vehicle previously, but after accelerating after a red light, the vehicle made a small noise - I had radio on so can't say for sure what it sounded like. I realized my gas pedal no longer accelerated, so I coasted into a parking lot.
It won't work in any gear except reverse. I can drive it home backwards (don't think i'll try this) - but in drive, I cannot even get the engine to rev. I did not think to try it in 4WD - can't say if that will work or not.
