Heater blower not working

This is a strange one. I just bought this car and of course the previous owner never had this problem. If I turn the car on when it's dark the the headlights turn on automaTically, as they should. If I turn on the fan the lights go out and the fan doesn't work. I can turn the lights on with the switch. Same with the rear defrost and seat warmers. If the fan is off when I start the car I can turn it on but it turns off as soon as I turn on the fan, which doesn't turn on.
