I was thinking that the fuel economy is really unimpressive for this car, as I've gotten 20.7/20.9 on several road trips in my 2002 4Runner, which has a power train/chassis that dates back to 1995. But I figured that the Escape has so much more going for it that maybe fuel economy can be looked past. But then I looked up the the mileage rating for the 2006 RAV4 V6 AWD: 21 combined 19/26. So now I'm back to thinking that the Escape 2.0 AWD ratings (23 combined 20/27) aren't very impressive at all.

Agreed, the Ford Escape was a car I was looking at when I first started looking at mid-size (although I realize I guess the Escape is compact)? Crossovers. The fuel economy Edmunds is stating here is terrible. I totally believe you on your '02 4Runner. When I had my Pathfinder (Get the user name ..get it?) I regularly got 18-20 MPG. Now with my Pilot, a significantly larger car than this Escape -- I regularly get 22-23, maybe 21 if I'm really pushing it. I have yet to get anything in the high teens.

I would expect to be closer to the 30 MPG mark as its competitors, Rouge, CR-V,Rav-4 try to hit. The 2.0L engine makes 245HP, where as the V6 '06 Rav-4 from the Camry, Highlander, etc made closer to 270HP.

Maybe it'll get better as they continue to (slowly) make updates on this new entry to the long term fleet.

So it drinks fuel like a Jeep Renegade. At least it drives better.

Ah 23 mpg is fine. The Mazda CX-5 gets a real world 25 combined.

Throw in higher speed driving with hills, wind, wet pavement, etc. and these small CUV's won't really do much, if any better than a Highlander or similar with their bigger six cylinder engines.

I'm in a big honking rental Santa Fe this week and I'm getting around 24.2, per the dash readout.

35 Grand for a 1.5? That's insane. There are so many better options for the money.

Ones with a lot less than the 19 recalls the Escape has had...
